I certainly enjoyed my part in the race. It was an interesting experience starting from the very last slot at 29th on the grid. Such a relaxed position to be in and when the lights turned to green there was no point in hurrying to get away, though in hindsight I know I could have snatched a few places as the pace at the back was so slow. My major concern was to preserve the car for its journey home. I had anticipated that the melee into the first few corners would produce a few skirmishes into the infield and I would then have my opportunity to sneak some places but I only gained two by this tactic. I then knew that I would have to try and learn the best lines as quickly as possible if I was going to make up any ground at all. Having recorded the slowest practice time and added weight prior to the race to satisfy our scrutineer, I feared it would be an impossible task. I was very pleasantly surprised to find myself overtaking two of our number in the early laps and that inspired me to press on and chase a group of about five ahead of me. It was impossible for me to tell who they were as my concentration was on driving, gaining ground and staying on the black stuff. There were one or two moments of concern, with Knickerbrook seeming to be the Achilles' heel of the circuit for me. Oh so slippery there and every possibility of overdoing it and ending up with Paul Butcher in the ditch. I felt able to carry most speed through Cascades and as I gained on the group in front I judged that Lakeside would provide my best opportunity to grab a place or two. I caught the group but unfortunately took too many laps to get the positioning just right to believe that I had enough speed to pass before Island bend. When I did get it right it was most satisfying to gain one more place. I believed that given time there were still more places to be won but I hadn't counted on the fact that I was on my penultimate lap. Just beginning to get into a rhythm and it was all over. I now know that I should have charged from the start and been more bold with the overtaking but there would have been too much risk involved in adopting that tactic. No, I was content with my 21st place and am only sorry that it was my fellow midlander, Jonathan,  who I pushed back a place in that final overtaking manoeuvre.

All in all a great days' racing, give me more. My support team did a wonderful job as usual in getting me prepared but failed to take as many photographs on the digital camera as I would have liked. They tell me that they were too engrossed in the action. The Scholars clearly produced some entertaining racing. I think we all deserve some praise.
